Five FAQs about Toddlers & Sleep

As a parent to two children under the age of three, I know that a good night’s sleep is important for everyone in the family. For toddlers, sleep is vital to their mental and physical development. When a child is sleeping, their brain is processing what they have learned and experienced, retaining the information for the future. It is also during deep sleep that the body releases many of the hormones related to growth. Your child’s immune system is also dependent on good sleep. Poor sleep habits have also been related to obesity, diabetes, heart disease and many other diseases. As a pediatrician, I answer a lot of questions about toddlers and sleep, how to create a sleep schedule, how much naptime is necessary and more. CPCMG After Hours Care Update:Appointments Required

Our ongoing commitment to patient safety means we provide your child’s healthcare in the safest setting possible. This includes scheduling all appointments for our patients, whether they need a routine wellness check or a sick visit. To keep your family healthy, CPCMG is ending walk-in appointments at Children’s Primary Extended Care locations starting Monday, January 25, 2021.   At that time, all evening appointments at our CPEC locations will require an appointment.   Scheduling an after-hours appointment is quick and easy: In San Diego County, call 858-302-2265: Phone lines will be open Monday through Thursday, 5pm – 8:30pm and Sunday, 9:30am – 2pm. In Riverside County, call 858-302-2266: Phone lines will be open Monday through Thursday, 5pm – 8:30pm and Sunday, 8am – 12 noon. If you call your CPCMG office after hours, please follow the prompts to transfer to the CPEC scheduling team. Soon you will be able to use your MyChart account to schedule after-hours appointments. 

It’s Library Shelfie Day!

In 2014, the New York Public Library declared this day for sharing “shelfies” in front of library shelves to inspire a love of books and reading. Unfortunately due to the pandemic we cannot visit our favorite libraries, but we can celebrate this day enjoying our favorite books at home. When books are part of the family routine, language skills grow. Books inspire imagination. Books can also help parents teach important values. Starting as early as birth, reading to children has been shown to help with bonding and to encourage a love of learning. Here are some ways to encourage reading at home: -Create a cozy reading area at home. -Make it daily routine to read with your child at least a few minutes a day. -Make story time interactive – point to Pictures and ask questions. -Keep books where they can be easily reached, so your kids can look through books on their own.
